Donkeys in Ethiopia 2011-2012, with The Donkey Sanctuary
Six million donkeys work in Ethiopia, and not just on the land - even in the capital, Addis Ababa, they're central to logistical planning, for the transport of goods. Keeping them busy and productive is an economic necessity as well as an animal welfare issue. The Donkey Sanctuary is better known for its care of retired and abandoned animals in the UK - but their overseas work has genuine meaning for poverty reduction, with immediate impact through treatment of individual working donkeys, and longer term impact through education and training.
