Biodiversity Collage
Susi’s a facilitator of the Biodiversity Collage – an interactive workshop based on IPBES reports. Participants explore how ecosystems function, the importance of biodiversity for humankind and the impacts we’re having – then discuss ways to combat biodiversity loss.
We’ve held sessions in rural Norfolk and London’s Deptford, Walthamstow and Southwark so far – email to request a workshop with your own group. Sessions take 3 hours, including a break. Now also incorporating the IPBES work on underlying causes and barriers to ‘Transformative Change‘.
Carbon Literacy
Before the COVID19 pandemic Susi ran courses for BAFTA albert, but during lockdown she accredited 3 of her own courses with the Carbon Literacy Project. (‘CLiP’, for ‘interested people’; ‘CLiJ’, for journalists, educators and anyone working in communication, and ‘CLiC’ for community groups.) They share some resources and the same goal – a science-based understanding of the Climate Emergency, and approaches for action to reduce emissions.
Carbon Literacy for communicators (‘CLiJ’ – originally designed for the National Union of Journalists, NUJ) has been run dozens of times with in-house and open groups involving media, business & education professionals but also fellow Union members, activists and colleagues. Running ‘CLiJ’ for Condé Nast’s global employee council was a case-study in tailoring to a cohort; from intern to senior management and from Beijing to LA, we juggled timezones and priorities and discussed INFLUENCE as well as ‘operational emissions’.
Over the years Susi’s trained well over 350 people; over 250 have qualified on Walking Pictures courses alone. CLiC has run with community and tenant groups, and ‘Friends Of’ open spaces. Peer-groups get their heads around the basics of weather, climate and greenhouse gases, working with data and untangling ‘greenwash’. They collaborate to imagine, sketch-plan and argue for sustainable futures – ranging from individual consumer choices to collective action, and strategies for pitching system change to gate-keepers and decision-makers.
Yes, all participants work on personal choices and their ‘footprints’; we’ll even look at the emissions involved in collective and professional activities. But the content, delivery and meaning of what you write, make, teach, perform, record or share can be far more important – your influence will be important to the wider changes we need now.
Sample course outline:
All 3 courses are the equivalent of a day’s training, 7-8 hours. The modules run in order, but can spread across one long day, or 4 distinct sessions. Gaps between these allow time for digestion, and homework!
